Patrick Swayze Addictions
No matter how ‘tough’ you may think you are, no one can beat a disease such as cancer, IF they continue to abuse their bodies with alcohol and tobacco addictions, just like Patrick Swayze!
In January 2009, Swayze admitted that his history as a recovering alcoholic and heavy cigarette smoker may have contributed to his illness.
He was quoted as saying, ‘My big regret is the physical damage I’ve done to my body. I can do almost anything physically and I used to believe I was invincible, breaking bones over and over, playing football, doing gymnastics, diving, ballet, doing my own stunts, kick boxing, staging fights … It all seems a little stupid to me now.’
Over the course of the years, Patrick had a three-pack-a-day cigarette habit in addition to his alcohol addiction that grew worse after his adored father died in 1982 from a heart attack.
During his illness, he even said in his own words that he is a ‘miracle man’ who is fighting a winning battle against pancreatic cancer. But that still didn’t stop him from puffing on cigarettes between breaks from shooting his latest TV show.
In one interview I saw with Barbara Walters, he was sounding like a “tough guy” and that he was going to beat this cancer. But then he admitted that he was still smoking!
When you see someone talking this way and yet keep on ‘abusing’ their body with addiction to tobacco (smoking) – how in the world can you ‘beat a disease’ with this mentality?!
In another interview he actually admitted that smoking probably had something to do with his pancreatic cancer.
But then in February, 2009, Swayze wrote a a piece to the Washington Post, titled, “I’m Battling Cancer. How About Some Help from Congress?” In the article he urged senators and representatives to vote for the maximum funding for the National Institutes of Health to fight cancer as part of the economic stimulus package. Swayze was dreaming that some day the word ‘cure’ will no longer be followed by the words ‘is possible.’
When is the world going to awake up and realize that we can spend millions of dollars on research, but none of this will make any sense so long as we continue to make ‘bad health’ choices. The best cure in the world is “Prevention”!
Don’t wait until you have a disease before you take action on ‘good health habits’!
