Safe Fish To Eat

There is more and more information surfacing as to what is in the fish we consume and the health hazards they may pose. A very toxic form of mercury called ‘methylmercury’ tends to build up in fish and animals that eat fish, which in turn is exposed to humans.

We know that mercury at high levels can harm the immune system as well as the brain, heart and lungs in humans of any age. Because of this, fish advisories are required to inform everyone to eat only fish that is low in methylmercury. This is especially important for pregnant women as mercury is even more dangerous to fetuses.

The types of fish that are considered to contain the highest level of mercury are Shark, Swordfish and King Mackerel.

I would avoid all farm raised fish. We frequently eat frozen salmon from Alaska year round (Trader Joes). Salmon is especially healthy for Omega 3 fatty acids.
